2018 Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Programs
We encourage strong, young swimmers to register for Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguards (3-week program) or Discover Junior Lifeguards (1-week program). Orientation / Skill Level Testing
There is an orientation for the participants and parents at Hardie Pool on the first day of each session. Uniforms will be distributed to participants as well as schedules and information about what’s expected of the participants.
This program demands above average swimming ability and participants should have a moderate level of comfort swimming in the ocean. All new and returning participants must satisfactorily complete the following Skill Level Tests on the first day of the session.
- 100 yard continuous swim in under 3 minutes without touching the bottom or side of the pool
- 10 yard underwater swim
- tread water for 5 minutes without touching the bottom or side of the pool
Code of Conduct
Unacceptable behavior, language or disrespectful attitude to any person will NOT be tolerated. Non-compliance will result in immediate dismissal from the program and no refund processed.
Attendance is required for all three weeks. Keep in mind this is a skills-building program. It is important to attend every day. We have very strong reservations about allowing kids to miss a whole day or more. Each day builds on the last, and depending on the rest of the class, conditions, and the inherent ability of the ones that miss a day, we might have to hold them out of certain rotations in the water if we are not comfortable with their abilities. We will not stop our progression to get these kids up to speed. Please do not call to ask if they can miss one week or a couple of days because of prior obligations. You will need to find a session that can fit into your schedule.
The CBJG uniform is a t-shirt and board short. We provide one t-shirt to all participants but you are responsible for purchasing board shorts. We prefer the board shorts to be ALL BLACK with a second choice of navy. White stitching is ok. Please no piping if at all possible. Good Clean Fun and Cayucos Surf Company have Junior Lifeguard Board shorts that are perfect for our program and they offer discounts to the participants. FOR SAFETY AND IDENTIFICAION PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR THEIR UNIFORM EVERY DAY! Additional t-shirts and sweatshirts may be purchased when you register.
What to Bring Each Day
Wetsuits are VERY HIGHLY recommended as the water temperatures can range from 50-60 degrees throughout the summer and the participants spend a majority of their time each day in the water. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, towel, sunscreen, snacks/lunch, water and don’t forget SUNSCREEN!!!!
This program does not provide meals. Please bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. There will be a 1/2 hour supervised lunch break each day.

Volunteer Aide Program
Volunteer Aides assist lifeguard staff in the daily operations of our Junior Lifeguard and Discover Junior Lifeguard Programs. Volunteers will further develop lifeguard skills, work habits and leadership skills as well as prepare them for lifeguard training and employment as a County Parks & Recreation Lifeguard. Depending on the number of sign-ups for our Volunteer Aide Program there may be a try-out process. You will be contacted if this occurs.
To register as a Volunteer Aide submit a JG Registration Form and write “Volunteer Aide” at the top. There is no charge to be a Volunteer Aide and this is considered a 3 week interview for potential employment as a lifeguard with County Parks.
Thank you to the following sponsors of the Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. Your support year after year is very much appreciated.
